Harnessing the power of microorganisms to capture greenhouse gases

Carbon dioxide is a chemical compound that is emitted in large quantities by many industrial activities. Recent years have seen an increased focus on Carbon Capture & Utilization (CCU), a technology that seeks to capture carbon dioxide for effective use elsewhere. While this technology demonstrates high potential for contributing to carbon neutrality—an essential goal for the society of the future—the variety of valuable resources produced by CCU remains limited.

Symbiobe’s Greenhouse Gas Fixation Project seeks to capture and utilize greenhouse gases by taking advantage of the characteristics of the marine purple photosynthetic bacteria that form the core of our manufacturing and raw materials business. We are working to establish a platform for upcycling greenhouse gases into high-value, high-unit-cost resources by building production plants that enable the mass cultivation of photosynthetic organisms.

A structurally and environmentally superior material production platform

The key advantage of Symbiobe's CCU technology is that it can directly convert greenhouse gases into materials. Our platform can handle carbon dioxide and nitrogen in a wide range of concentrations, and is even compatible with gases mixed with nitrogen oxides from automobiles and sulfur compounds generated from the combustion of oil and coal.

As their name implies, marine purple photosynthetic bacteria are autotrophic organisms that can be cultured under seawater conditions. In other words, because of its effective utilization of readily available, abundant natural resources like sunlight and seawater, the platform that Symbiobe is developing naturally delivers reduced environmental costs.

Our goal is to further develop and promote this resource-recycling material production platform, thereby helping to update manufacturing to a form that can be passed on to the next generation. Through this approach, we hope to work with our partners to build a sustainable society and industry and to establish new norms for the utilization of greenhouse gas emissions.

Organic agricultural fertilizer

Air Fertilizer® is a completely new, nitrogen-rich (amino acids, peptides, and so on) organic fertilizer for use in agriculture. Air Fertilizer® seeks to address issues present in current fertilizer options. For example, chemical fertilizers are fast acting but require high amounts of energy to produce and can damage soil quality with continued use. On the other hand, while organic fertilizers are much more environmentally friendly, identifying suitable conditions for their use and their effect on crops can be difficult. Symbiobe’s Air Fertilizer® has the potential to compensate for the drawbacks of these existing products.
